macOS – Monterey Update Notice

ATTENTION: macOS – Monterey Information

Apple recently released a new Operating System named Monterey (12.0)

UMS IT is recommending that university-owned Mac devices NOT BE UPGRADED to Monterey at this time due to known issues with the operating system. Although steps have been taken to prevent the upgrade from installing on UMS IT managed devices, we cannot prevent the install on unmanaged devices.

What are the known issues with Monterey?

  • No available and tested canon or other printer drivers
  • New Eduroam wireless onboarding failures
  • ESET antivirus software must first be upgraded to version 6.11.1
  • Viscosity VPN client requires an upgrade to version 1.10.0
  • Potential issues with other applications or utilities not listed here.

Once the Monterey OS issues are resolved, UMS IT will notify users that the upgrade is approved and remove the restrictions that are preventing installation on managed devices.

When are Mac Operating Systems no longer supported?

Apple only provides updates and security patches for the three most recent versions of its operating system. With the release of Monterey, Apple no longer supports updates and security patches to Operating Systems prior to Catalina (10.15).

Considerations when purchasing a new Mac

Please be aware that new Mac’s may arrive with the Monterey OS (12.0). If your new Mac arrives with Monterey it cannot be downgraded to a prior OS release as Apple does not provide any means to accomplish an OS downgrade. Please contact the IT Help Desk (help@maine.edu or 207.581.2506) if you encounter any issues.
